Secondhand Smoke by Kim Hauer, spring 2006 intern

When most people choose not to smoke, they feel that they are making a conscious decision to not poison their body with over 4,000 chemicals found in cigarettes. What they may not know is that although they are not directly inhaling smoke from a cigarette of their own, they could possibly be inhaling the smoke from the cigarette of a friend that is standing right next to them. According to the Committee on Environmental Hazards, because secondhand smoke burns at a lower temperature than inhaled smoke, it contains two times more tar and five times more carbon monoxide. GRANT AWARDS

LBCTF and CAGNO are "Embracing Prevention, Supporting Treatment"

The Louisiana Breast Cancer Task Force (LBCTF) has awarded CAGNO a $6,514 grant to support cancer treatment and to provide educational seminars and materials to community members in 13 parishes of Southeast Louisiana. Because of LBCTF's generosity, breast cancer patients who need to purchase lymphedema sleeves, pumps, breast prostheses, bras or other medical supplies and equipment can contact CAGNO to receive financial assistance.  Schools, businesses, and organizations wishing to embrace prevention and help raise awareness about breast cancer and the importance of early detection can contact Tammy, health educator, to schedule a seminar about general breast health or how to perform breast self-examinations.  LBCTF's grant will also enable CAGNO to purchase shower cards and bookmarks to distribute at health fairs and presentations. CAGNO thanks LBCTF for their generous partnership.
