Bras for a Cause June 22nd-24th, 2012
Star-Studded Fundraiser Announced
What does an award-winning country singer/songwriter, two James Beard award-winning chefs and a national news personality all have in common? Each shares a passionate commitment to wipe out cancer. Singer Martina McBride, Executive Chef Susan Spicer, Celebrity Chef Emeril Lagasse and NBC’s Today Show co-host Hoda Kotb are among the many personalities lending their creative talents for a great cause. Each has designed a spectacular piece of art using a ‘bra’ as their canvas.

Uninsured Cancer Patients Stall Treatment Due to High Medical Bills
An estimated 112,000 Americans with cancer have no health insurance and are less likely to receive optimum care, reports the Associated Press. The article describes a recent essay in the Journal of the American Medical Association by Dr. Perry Klaassen, a primary care physician who at 61 was diagnosed with colon cancer and "received the most efficient care possible." He wrote that his care "starkly contrasts" with that received by Shirley Seacy, an uninsured patient of his. Klaassen’s essay "underscores that insurance can be a life or death issue," said Paul Ginsburg, president of the nonpartisan Center for Studying Health System Change. As Klaassen said, "People say…nobody ever dies because they don’t have insurance, and I say, ‘Yeah, they do.’" Read the entire Washington Post article.
